In which we are Waterford

Glass is pretty basic – made of sand, soda ash, and limestone.

Throw in some lead and you have crystal.

We like crystal – fancy glass.

Throw in exactly 24% lead and you have fine crystal.

The lead adds weight and brilliance. This is the stuff we heart the most.

Then there’s the craftsmanship – and the inherent honor of a name. It’s better to be “Waterford” or “Swarovski” than “Jones” or “O’Malley”. Those are fine names in their own right – but not for crystal.

Human is good – human is like glass. It’s way better to be human than anything else. Company gets served in glass – not paper cups. Right?

I guess there are not so good humans, and better ones, and some of the better ones are even crystal. This would be the Jones and O’Malley crystal.

Then there are the Waterford, Mikasa, Swarovski kind of humans – the ones living out the faith.

In the ongoing study of James he’s been on the case of “rich” people dealing unfairly with the “poor”, at the same time being hard on the “not so rich” placating the “rich” – just to gain favor. No matter what our station in life is – we judge – not very crystalline.

But at least in this case, the “rich” are the glass-y – or cracked crystal-y – and and the “not so rich” are the Waterford.

James writes, “Is it not they who blaspheme the noble name that was invoked over you?” (JS 2:7)

Remember the story of the Christian baker and the Senator (here and here) – or James’ two verse parable where the rich guy is shown the “good” seat – which in the Greek meant the “really really good” seat. (JS 2:2,3)

Well “noble” in this verse is the same Greek word as that one. The name we bear is that kind of name. It’s the “really really good” name.

And this whole “in the name of” thing.
It’s a Jewish thing.
James is so Jewish in his writing.
He gets that we are all Jewish,
grafted onto the vine,
that we are Christian Jews.

And so the “bearing the name” thing comes from here.

This, which was said to the Israelites by Moses as they were about to enter into the Promised Land:

“The LORD will affirm his blessing upon you, on your barns and on all your undertakings, blessing you in the land that the LORD, your God, gives you. Provided that you keep the commandments of the LORD, your God, and walk in his ways, he will establish you as a people sacred to himself, as he swore to you; so that, when all the nations of the earth see you bearing the name of the LORD, they will stand in awe of you.” (DT 28:8-10)

And Jeremiah 14:9 – written to the Israelites after they had messed up so completely that God was about to take them out of the Promised Land. Jeremiah intercedes for them “reminding” God:

You are in our midst, O LORD, your name we bear: do not forsake us!

If you’ve been reading me you know I’m writing this for you in a massively sleep deprived state.

I feel very paper cup-y.

The thing for me today, is to remember,
that although my body may be paper cup-y-ish
my innermost being is Waterford.

Today is to fight circumstances not like paper, or glass, or O’Malley crystal – but the good stuff.

Today I find a way to bear the name – and bear it well darnit!

just today and tomorrow,
and then I move on.

But I’m gonna go now – the body and mind are feeling very paper cup-y-ish.
