“She rises while it is still night…” (Proverbs 31:15)
“her lamp is never extinguished….” (Proverbs 31:18)
Mom…
constantly thinking about us…
always feathering the nest…
crying happy tears when we could see…
saving the bitter ones for after we were in bed.
And I never figured out how I could make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, leave the peanut butter, bread, knife, and jelly on the counter, and yet it all magically disappeared.
This is part two, I began my Proverbs 31 thank you’s to my mom last post.
I always kidded with you that it must have been a mother who invented the saying “a mother’s work is never done”, just so you could torture us with it. I was convinced it was a conspiracy of moms. But a mother didn’t write Proverbs 31, and I think now that’s where we get the saying.
God knows the secret things and sometimes he clues the clueless in.
She girds herself with strength; (Proverbs 31:16)
You doled out strength and courage to your babies…
and had to supply all your own strength for yourself.
There was no one to encourage the encourager.
You survived polio as a child…you had to.
Because someone had to be mama bear…
keeping brothers and sisters together …
after both parents abdicated the thrown.
I learned “gentle, loving, never give up” strength from watching you.
“She watches over the affairs of her household” (Proverbs 31: 27)
You cooked, mended, ironed…
and paid every bill on time.
You were the family library…
the guardian of memories …
our official Department of Records.
You never forgot the important things and saw to it that we remembered too.
“She reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy.” (Proverbs 31:20)
Maybe because you lived such an impoverished childhood, you always found time for mercy.
Even when we were poor, you found ways to help others…and you did it without fanfare.
And all the time you were giving to others…
you made sure we had what we needed first.
I never heard this from anyone else, but I know it still.
I once thought it was part of the great mom conspiracy…
…but now I know it to be true.
And it’ll take one more day to thank you…
to send Happy Mother’s Day wishes…
from here to heaven.
